The Wakefield Fire Department responded to 354 emergency incidents during the month of June 2023 including 34 box alarms and 320 still alarms. The department responded to seven requests for mutual aid during June, five times to Stoneham and once each to Lynnfield and Malden. The department received mutual aid twice during May, once each from Lynnfield and Melrose. A crew from Engine 2 under Lt. John Mercurio covered Stoneham Fire Headquarters during an extended brush fire in that community on the afternoon of June 1. A crew from Engine 2 led by Lt. Sean Curran covered a vacant Malden Fire Station during a 3-alarm fire in that community during the early morning of June 16. Firefighters from Engine 2 under Lt. John Mercurio covered Stonham Fire Headquarters during a fire at 100 Leisure Lane at noon on June 19. Firefighters from Engine 2 under the command of Acting Lieutenant Chris Sullivan assisted the Stoneham Fire Department at the scene of 2-alarm fire at 45 Park Street during the afternoon of June 20. Another crew from Engine 2 led by Lieutenant John Mercurio covered Stoneham Fire Headquarters during an extended incident in that community during the early evening of June 21. Lieutenant Cliff Silva responded with the crew of Engine 1 and the fire boat to 2 Northway Street in Lynnfield to assist that department with the search for a person feared to have drowned in a lake at that location during the evening of June 26. Lt. John Mercurio and a crew from Engine 2 covered Stoneham Fire Headquarters during a fire in that community at 16 Pine Street on the afternoon of June 27.
All groups participated in Emergency Medical Technician training classes, trained with the department’s two fire boats, and conducted annual business fire safety inspections during June. Many Kindergarten and preschool children enjoyed washing a fire truck with the help of firefighters during the month of June. Children from the Dolbeare, Doyle, Greenwood, Walton and Woodville Schools took part in this fun and soapy activity during June. Firefighters also paid a visit to some children participating in a day camp sponsored by the Wakefield Police Department on June 27. The Department held its annual Firefighter Memorial Sunday Ceremony on June 11, allowing family and friends an opportunity to remember Wakefield’s deceased firefighters. The ceremony is held every second Sunday in June at Lakeside Cemetery. All of the department’s self- contained breathing apparatus were inspected and flow-tested during June.
