The Wakefield Fire Department responded to 290 emergency incidents during the month of August including 35 box alarms and 255 still alarms.
The Department responded to seven requests for mutual aid during August, three times to Melrose, three times to Lynnfield, and once to Reading. It received mutual aid once in August from Lynnfield. A crew under Lt. Christopher Smith covered Reading Fire Headquarters while that department was tied up at an incident during the early afternoon of August 20. Lieutenant Smith and the same crew responded to Lynnfield shortly after returning from Reading on the afternoon of August 20 and assisted that department at their working fire at the DPW facility in the rear of 59 Summer Street.
Firefighters under the command of Captain Paul Pronco extinguished a fire in a 22-foot recreational boat in the parking lot of the Colonial Point Apartment Building located at 95 Audubon Road during the early morning of August 4. The fire caused extensive damage to the boat and appeared to be intentionally set. Captain Pronco and Lieutenant Sean Curran led another group of fire fighters at a fire involving and MBTA bus on North Avenue during the afternoon of August 14. This fire was caused by a malfunction in the engine compartment of the bus.
All four groups conducted a walk-thru of the newly constructed residential buildings at the Market Street development just over the town line in Lynnfield, behind the Sheraton Colonial Hotel. This tour is part of an ongoing process to acquaint the Lynnfield and Wakefield Fire Departments with significant properties located on the Wakefield-Lynnfield Town Line. The department conducted its annual pumping test of its three fire engines in August.
Veteran Wakefield Fire Lieutenant Kevin P. Carney retired from the Wakefield Fire Department on August 15 after serving more than 36 years with the department. Lieutenant Carney was appointed a permanent firefighter on August 6, 1977. He was appointed Fire Lieutenant on April 17, 2003. At the time of his retirement, Lieutenant Carney was the senior Lieutenant on the department. We thank Lieutenant Carney for his many years of service and wish him a long and healthy retirement with his family.
Wakefield Firefighter Christopher Scott completed a 45 day recruit training program with the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Class 200, graduating from the Academy on August 30, 2013. We wish Firefighter Scott a successful career with the Wakefield Fire Department.
